OKULAR WARNING: Don't Lose Your Bookmarks




Here at Luke's LO Hacks we love Okular, a free, open-source pdf program that is one of our main companion programs to LibreOffice Writer. It's great, but not perfect, which means from time to time we find either a glitch or have a suggestion for an improvement. In truth, glitches are few, but one significant glitch we discovered was the loss of bookmarks after renaming a pdf file that we bookmarked.

Here's the sequence:

  1. Open pdf.
  2. Add bookmarks (in this case, quite a few).
  3. Save the file and close it.
  4. In Nautilus (file folders program for Ubuntu Linux), rename the file to append the word "Bookmarked."
  5. Re-open the file.
Result: Bookmarks disappeared, had to re-bookmark everything.

Bug Report: A bug report was submitted (Okular version 1.10.0). 

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

If you have experienced the same problem, make sure you re-name your file BEFORE adding bookmarks; and once you have added bookmarks, don't change the file name unless you don't mind re-bookmarking the file.

Creating an Epub file with a clickable TOC using Libreoffice and Google Docs

We recommend you bookmark this blog. Trying to find helpful information in forums usually just ends in making you frustrated and angry. This blog does not speculate or guess. If we post it, we've tried it and it works. In LibreOffice: Create a LibreOffice Writer document. Format the document using Styles, using Headings (1,2,3,4 etc) for TOC levels (example: Heading 1 for Chapter name; Heading 2 for Chapter Subtopic; and so forth). Maximum Footnote Area, LibreOffice Writer

In LibreOffice Writer, there is an option for defining how much space a footnote can occupy on a page…but it is an option in theory only. In actuality, the function is quirky and The Document Foundation has, to my knowledge, never come up with a reason for the problem, not to mention a fix for it. The scenario (see images above) Let's say that you have a fairly long document and you want your footnotes to be numbered consecutively for the entire document, and you want your footnotes to appear at the end of each page. So far, so good. You have discovered how to make that happen by going to Tools, Footnotes and Endnotes, and doing the set-up there.
